EDUCATION MATTERS #60

By Dr. Ben Yocom – Milan C-2 School District Superintendent

“STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE IN EVERYTHING”

The Milan C-2 School District began the 2nd quarter of the 2019-20 School Year on Monday, 10/14/19 – Parent-Teacher Conferences were held on 10/17/19 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.  If you were unable to attend the conferences and would like to talk with a teacher/staff member regarding your child’s performance – please contact the Elementary office (for staff serving grades PK-6) or the High School office (for staff serving grades 7-12).  They will allow you to schedule a time, as needed.

The Better MC2 Project 2020 is taking shape and the various sub-contractors have been preparing the ground for concrete delivery.  Please follow the district’s website and respective social media platforms for real time updates regarding the overall progress of the historic project.  The schedule calls for the Cafeteria/Commons Area and renovated Library-Media Center – plus Elementary –  to be completed by the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.  All stakeholders within the project still feel confident that this will be accomplished.  The gymnasium completion is slated to be at the beginning of the 2020-21 Basketball Seasons (in November of 2020).  It is absolutely vital that all of us continue to have patience and be flexible throughout the project.  I am extremely proud of everyone’s flexibility since the beginning of the process and words cannot express how much the school appreciates the community response!  It has been extraordinary!

Softball season for the Lady Cat softball teams ended on 10/16/19.  The HS team was eliminated in the first round of the district tournament.  The team, overall, showed signs of improvement and growth throughout the year.  The JH team had high participation numbers and displayed outstanding efforts throughout the season!  Great job ladies and coaches!

The Varsity Football team will begin the annual post-season play on Friday, November 1st, 2019.  The opponent and location for this game has not been determined as the records and point-spreads play a role in the district match ups.  Stay tuned to the various district communication platforms for locations and times.

Our Emerald Regiment band and Color guard have represented the Milan C-2 Family in an extremely positive manner.  They placed in marching competitions at Monroe City, Centerville and had a solid performance at the annual Missouri Days in Trenton.  Mr. Waugh, Ms. Thompson and all students have worked extremely hard to provide an outstanding product!  Congrats to all and keep it up!

The annual community Trunk or Treat will be held on Sunday, 10/27/19 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sullivan County Expo Center – this is sponsored by the Milan C-2 PTO and available for all ages.  The birth through Preschool Trunk or Treat will also be at the Sullivan County Expo Center (due to construction) on Wednesday, 10/30/19 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Please make plans to participate in one or both of these events!

As most of you may have heard, the Milan C-2 Family had an extremely difficult situation last week and for varying reasons, I will not provide any specifics.  I will, however, say that if anyone is aware of anything that could be construed as a harmful situation involving students or anyone, please report the information to the appropriate individuals.  Please contact any office at the school or any other agency within the community.

The school serves the community, the parents-guardians; but most importantly – the school serves ALL students.  We will continue to serve, within the best of our ability.  Again, if there are any questions or concerns about anything – please contact the school.
